Graduating high school students received post-secondary education support
Nearly 100 high school graduates headed to college received scholarships and/or laptops as well as backpacks loaded with additional necessities from Greater Milwaukee Urban League during its annual Scholarship and Laptop Awards program. The Awards program took place June 12, 2024 at the Milwaukee County Zoo’s Peck Welcome Center.
Graduates from throughout the Milwaukee area were recognized for their academic accomplishments. The $1,000 scholarships provided needed financial support for tuition, room and board, or other school-related items. In addition, students that received the laptops also received software and other needed accessories. A total of 42 scholarships and 65 laptops were presented at the event.
Seven scholarships were awarded by Kohler, Inc. as part of a corporate grant program supporting the post-secondary education of young people in communities where the company is located, Alabama, Mississippi, and Wisconsin. The remaining scholarships and laptops were sponsored by Enterprise Mobility, Kohl’s Cares, and Greater Milwaukee Urban League.
Scholarship and laptop recipients are attending colleges and universities throughout Wisconsin, including UW-Madison, UWM, MSOE, MIAD, MATC, Marquette, Concordia, and Mount Mary. Students are also enrolled out-of-state including 8 Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Twelve of the laptop recipients and five of the scholarship awardees participated in various GMUL education programs including, Graduate-to-Employment, Urban Youth Development, Pathways, Project Ready Mentor, and the GMUL’s Youth Driver’s License Permit Course.
