General Education Diploma (GED)
For persons seeking to continue their primary and secondary education, or develop/improve basic skills to manage their daily lives, our Adult Basic Education Program, in partnership with MATC, is available. This program is a comprehensive educational program which provides courses from grades 1 through 12. Basic education coursework is offered in reading, writing, mathematics, oral communications, natural sciences, and social studies with an emphasis in the development of critical thinking, problem solving skills, and career planning. Hours of Operation are Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
Students develop Personal Education Plans (PEP), with the assistance of the instructor, to establish short and long term educational goals; including the attainment of a High School Equivalency Certificate (HSED) or General Education Diploma (GED).
Persons over 18 years of age are eligible. Students or young adults can also take advantage of this program prior to acceptance in the apprenticeship training program offered through the Milwaukee Urban League Workforce Development Department. By design, this program is open entry - open exit for flexibility in meeting as many individual needs as possible.
The program staff recognizes the need to bridge the affordability gap that exists for most families who want their children to attend college. Financial Aid forums and workshops, that involve both the parents and children, are also implemented by the department.
